John has over thirty years’ experience at Unilever in the food & beverage sector & the household & personal care sector, including senior roles as general manager, category director, supply chain director, commercial director & export manager.

John was General Manager and Category Director of Unilever’s Fats & Oils business (formerly Flora Foods), during which he had responsibility for improving the profitability of the business, launching Flora pro-activ (Unilever’s most successful spreads launch in many decades), the sale of the Van den Berghs frozen bakery business and the strategy for Unilever’s participation in the fats & oils market in Australasia (see below).

John was Supply Chain Director/Supply Chain Vice President of Unilever Australasia, during which he had responsibility for:

  • restructuring & selling Unilever’s non-retail fats & oils business & outsourcing of the manufacture of Unilever’s retail spreads products to Peerless;

  • significantly improving customer service & lowering the supply chain cost base;

  • significantly changing sourcing arrangements, closing the Australian tea factory & relocating sourcing to India & Indonesia & rationalising savoury production from two factories into one factory;

  • significant investment in the Streets ice cream factory and the manufacturing of ready to drink tea; and

  • the building of a world class aerosol deodorants operation, which now exports products to Asia.


Since joining Origin, John has been involved in a number of assignments, including advising Symex/Pental on the acquisition of its White King and Janola business from Sara Lee, and advising GrainCorp on the acquisition of Goodman Fielder’s commercial fats and oils division. Subsequent to that advisory role, John spent 18 months secondment to GrainCorp as General Manager of GrainCorp Foods, the business acquired from Goodman Fielder.
